'Cos I wanted to ask you something, and I wanted to be sure that you weren't busy. That's politeness.
[It's a strained attempt at humour, which means it's not actually humourous at all. Merlin, but he sounds an idiot. Right.]
I wanted to ask you to come over. On Jack's behalf. Which sounds weird, I know, but he didn't put me up to it, or anything, I was just-- He's perfectly capable of asking on his own.
[Jack's voice is happy, nearly ecstatic as he speaks.]
Oh darlin'! Sweetness, light-o'-my-life darlin'? I got a surprise for us. Don't eat dinner tonight. Meet me at my house-- er-- an hour before the siren sounds.
[Oh, what's this? She sends a text back to say she'll be there, of course, and once she sends all the little ones to bed and has changed out of her work clothes, she heads over to Jack's place to see him.]
[Jack had asked Alice out for a date after work-- nothing big, he told her, just dinner and a movie. If she wanted to dress up a bit for it, that'd be great, but no big deal.
He waits outside the orphanage, clenching his hands to stop them from shaking. The rings sit in his suit pocket. They're simple things, bands of plain silver, but Jack swears he can feel them even now.
He exhales sharply and glances at his watch. She's a few minutes late, and normally that's no problem, but now of all days Jack wishes she'd hurry.]
[And she's there not long after, having gone to change into something decent for him. She's in one of her newer dresses that she got for Christmas, dressed to impress. Lizzie's key hangs from a chain around her neck instead of her charm.
She smiles when she sees him, surprised to see the suit.]

She's upright on the couch immediately, sleeping at the firehouse with Yorick in her lap. He yaps at her when she moves.
With shaky hands, she writes back.]
Jack?
[Of course it's him. This would be a cruel joke otherwise.]
Oh God are you all right?

IGood. All right.[She wants to ask him so many things but...but if he's in the hospital...]
You never left.

[A pause. He switches his NV so he can speak to her.]
Missed you.
[He sounds quite hoarse, his voice strangled and a bit hesitant.]

You look very done up, Jack Kelly.
[And nervous.]
How are you?
no subject
[He takes her hand with his left; his right is in his jacket pocket, clenching the rings tightly.]
I'll fix the layout in a bit, love ;;
I'm good. They're all all right. They're glad we might get snow soon. They want to go sledding.
Aw, take your time, it's not that bad!
